The Dark Hedges - Atmospheric Tree Lined Road

The Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland, shot with the Sony A7rII and 24-70 f4. I took a bracked set of 3 exposures but found in processing that the standard exposure captured the full dynamic range so there was no need for an HDR merge. I would really love to go back here in more dramatic light.

    Elvis Chapel at Superstition Mountain

This is the Elvis Chapel at Superstition Mountain Museum, on the Apache Trail in Nevada. It has been used for the filming of many westerns and is still used as a wedding chapel. Oh, and that's our hired Mustang in the foreground.

Found this little fellow at ZSL London Zoo. It was a rainy day so the only photo opportunities were in doors.

Leaves on the turn. Just about another week and we should have autumn colours.

  • Waddeston Manor

    Waddeston Manor

    Waddeston Manor in Buckinghamshire.

It is always difficult to get a good shot of a National Trust property on a Sunday afternoon, when the weather is good. This was particularly the case here as there seemed to be a procession of people walking across the path in front of us. I had to resort to taking multiple exposures and using Photoshop to sort the problem.

This one required two bracketed sets of 3 exposures. The two merged images were then stacked in Photoshop and a number of the people masked out.

I used an aperture of f 22 to get front to back sharpness.

    Waddeston Manor

Another shot of Waddeston Manor showing up behind the flowers. Given how close the flowers are and to all intents the manor is at infinity a small aperture was needed to get front to back focus, in this case f22.

There are a couple of downsides to using an aperture this small, especially with a 16 mm focal length. Firstly the image quality gets degraded a bit due to diffraction. This only matters if the image is displayed large or printed. Secondly any dust spots on the sensor really show up. I removed mine with Photoshop.

  • Waddeston Manor

    Waddeston Manor

Waddeston Manor in Buckinghamshire on a busy Sunday afternoon. The reason it doesn't look so busy is that I took 7 shots, layered them and masked out the people. Nice to have at least the illusion of having the whole place to ourselves.

Shot in the Valley of Fire in Nevada. I have to say that the Valley of Fire lives up to its name, not only in the colour of the rocks but also in the temperatures in early August at midday, when this was shot.

    Cheap Gas

What I like about this scene is that the pump can only charge up to $9.99. In the UK that would buy you just over 1 US gallon at today's prices, which are quite low.

I would imagine this car would use about that much just to start the engine!

    What a Machine!

Seriously! This one would really turn heads as you drive down Main Street. They don't make em like they used to. Straight out of a Stephen KIng novel.

I just love these old cars. This was one of many, presumably from the 1950's at a Ghost Town in Nevada. They don't make em like they used to!

    Hot Rocks

Does this look hot? Well it was. The temp was somewhere around 107 F. They don't call this the Valley of Fire for no reason.

If you are ever in the Las Vegas area you really should take a drive out here. Probably better in March than in August though.
